COME AS YOU ARE: Houston Come As You Are: HOUSTON! This September, DiverseWorks invites you to attend Come As You Are: HOUSTON! a provactive exploration of queer sex through performance art! Some of Houston's edgiest queer artists will come together for 2 nights only to perform works as original as the theater presenting them. Come As You Are: HOUSTON! artists are politicially charged, multi-generational and totally unihibited. Nancy Douthey Come As You Are was originally created and produced by The Theater Offensive in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Inspired by the 40th Anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, Come As You Are aims to investigate and celebrate queer sex, the diverse range of queer sexuality and the moral values underneath. Sexual freedom and expression by LGBTQ folks were powerful causes of the Stonewall riots. Come As You Are is a national project that gives grants to theaters so that they may create their own original production about queer sex. For more information, visit www.comeasyouareonline.org. Come As You Are is supported by the National Performance Network , Arcus Foundation, Flynn Performing Arts Center, Composition, and Theater Offensive. Come As You Are is sponsored by Living Mosaic, Muffin Man, Saint Arnold Brewing Company, t'afia, Transgender Foundation of America, Whole Foods Check out some of the press coverage on Come As You Are: HOUSTON! COME AS YOU ARE: Burlington LGBT "Stonewall Celebration" Friday, September 17, 2010, 7:00 PM $25 adults, $21 students Society has lost or is close to losing the people who fought, rallied, and resisted the social structures that once made queerness a crime, a mental disease, and caused us to lie about who we are to ourselves and to the world. They laid the foundation and created the changes that led to domestic partnerships, civil unions, and (at least in some states) gay marriage. Based on extensive interviews, Gregory Ramos’ When We Danced seeks to capture the stories of these individuals and their perspectives on aging. Come As You Are is a raucous celebration of queer sexuality in honor of the 41st anniversary of Stonewall. Abe Rybeck from Boston’s Theatre Offensive will perform excerpts from A Street Theater Named Desire, a show about the history of the Theatre Offensive’s AIDS activist performance work in gay cruising areas. The excerpts will include the pieces Grand Old Fag—about dynamics between generations of gay cruisers—and It’s Risky, a hysterical cabaret number about anal sex, sadomasochism, and falling in love. The evening also includes music and storytelling by guitarist Melissa Li and percussionist Ashley Baier, and features outrageous turns from Burlington’s Josie Leavitt, the House of LeMay, Shawn Lipenski, and others. NOTE: There is greater seating capacity for Come As You Are, which begins at 9 pm. Tickets will be available at the door for $20. |
